HerTZ Mapper

Applications in service include:
• Cellular site coverage
• Private Mobile Radio or LMR
• Radio Paging
• Rural telephony/telemetry
• Broadcast (FM Bands I/II/III, Television Bands III-V)
• Frequency Co-ordination and MOU compliance
• Marine Radio (DF coverage, VHF marine in coastal areas)

Previous radio planning software has often been the restricted domain of technical experts on specialist computer systems working on large radio networks. HerTZ Mapper affords field engineers, planners and marketers involved with mobile radio, broadcast or fixed link systems the benefits of a powerful software tool capable of operation on a modest hardware platform.
For engineers engaged in fixed link and telemetry path planning, HerTZ Mapper allows the direct generation of path profiles. During clearance surveys, terrain profiles can be modified on screen and ground clutter can be added to improve the prediction accuracy. When sites are found to be unworkable, the field engineer has the tools at hand to re-configure his system. In the case where there is no digital terrain data available, path profiles can be entered manually, allowing the engineer to work anywhere in the world.

Broadcast engineers can search for the best transmitter site using HerTZ Mapper’s intervisibility function and go on to predict population covered by projection onto suitable map images. Multiple ‘what if’ questions can be posed while visiting sites, where mast loading and availability can be considered without having to refer back to base. In live broadcast systems, outside broadcast planners can quickly deduce the signal to noise ratio or likely bit error rate for a radio car link.

Mobile radio engineers can use HerTZ Mapper to assess coverage whilst in the process of discussion with their customers, making considered judgments on sites, equipment and antenna systems.

Measured signal data from test transmissions can be compared with predicted data on screen to verify true performance against predicted. The engineer can also analyse co-sited transmitter systems and intermodulation products and so reduce the effects of interference. A GPS interface allows operator position to be shown on the screen with a suitable GPS receiver.

In short, HerTZ Mapper is a state-of-the-art radio communications system planning tool designed to meet the needs of field engineers, planners and marketers in simulating network performance in the frequency range 30MHz to 60GHz   - whatever the radio technology.

1 HerTZ Mapper uses a simpler set of models than ICS Telecom or HTZ Warfare and hence treatment of all effects may not be complete.

Evaluation Version
May we invite you to assess the abilities of HerTZ Mapper by downloading the evaluation version.

The evaluation version is a cut down version which demonstrates the primary functionality of HerTZ Mapper. It can only be utilised with the included map data, but is otherwise fully functional.

If the full version is purchased then this would be the latest version with a number of enhancements.

The evaluation version is contained in a .zip file for convenient download. This includes a demo guide, in Acrobat .pdf format, as a separate file.
To load the evaluation version run the file HM98.exe and the software will be installed on your computer. Instructions for use are included in the demo guide.

Main Features
HerTZ Mapper is complete and flexible and is the ideal tool for simple radio network simulation and analysis.

Definition of a station
The menus of HerTZ Mapper allow the user to simply define the detailed characteristics of a transmitter: name, geographic co-ordinates, power, frequency, height above the ground, antenna patterns, etc.
Setting up a network is rapid. A new transmitter can be defined by clicking on a point directly on the digital map or by co-ordinates (metric or Lat/Long) and then filling in the dialog box that appears. Stations can be replicated, moved, activated, deactivated and deleted quickly allowing locations and network configurations to be analysed, modified and optimised efficiently.

Visibility
HerTZ Mapper automatically calculates radio visibility from a transmitter, taking into account the topography of the terrain, the height of both transmitter and receiver, and earth curvature.
The user can then easily position the best transmission site or ideal locations for a repeater station. HerTZ Mapper can also calculate the intervisibility within many transmission sites, (places seen by 1, 2, 3, or N transmitters).

Point to Point Links
HerTZ Mapper allows extraction of a terrain profile and analysis of point to point links between stations or any point on the terrain. The Fresnel zones, as well as line of sight and earth curvature, are shown on the terrain profile. This profile may then be enhanced to modify ground height or take into account ground occupancy (forests, urban areas, water) and simulate the impact of obstacles that would not be on the Digital Terrain Model (DTM).
The operator adjusts parameters of the transmitter and receiver if necessary, and the path budget of the microwave link is automatically updated.

Coverage Calculation
For coverage calculation of each site, the user has immediate access to propagation models, and chooses the most adapted propagation/diffraction models for his project. (a range of models is available upon request)
After calculation, the coverage area appears on the digital image or on the DTM using coloured shading to indicate where user defined thresholds have been exceeded.

Network Study
HerTZ Mapper provides all necessary tools for network study: composite coverage calculation, interference analysis between stations (using the C/I method), simulcast studies, etc.  A comparison between measurements and simulation can be made to validate a study conducted on an existing network or to manage a network.
Once the coverage is calculated for each site, the operator can easily study interactions between stations in a network. Parameters can be modified and summations changed to model different scenarios sothat an optimised network can be achieved. All the results can then be displayed with transparent colours on the digital maps.

Customer Care
HerTZ Mapper can integrate a user constructed demographic file containing complete statistical data on the population of a country. HerTZ Mapper automatically compares network geographic coverage to the distribution of population in terms of ages, income, or any other data.
Moreover, for better management of final client needs, HerTZ Mapper includes an automatic city search tool, and can coordinate on-site operation reports and client feed back.

Cartographic Information
The calculations take into account a Digital Terrain Model (DTM), which is a file containing the height of all the terrain, and digital images that allow you to position the stations and display the results.
The user can change the image at any time, ie, to modify the map scale. After a change, HerTZ Mapper automatically redisplays the stations and coverage on the new image.

Printing and reports
All results can be printed with high quality on any WindowsTM compatible printer, or exported to image or text files
